Art and arts programming is thought of conceptually as a tool to produce knowledge as well as mediate divisions of ideologies, nationalities, races, and classes, both within the city of New York and universally. As a result, a series of thought provoking programs and exhibitions have been laid out for the 2011 year. All of which will culminate in a bi-annual event now slotted for May 2012. HB2012 will bring together artists, curators, educators, and the public to connect with the history and geography of Harlem and explore culturally relevant themes and issues.

The Harlem Biennale will be kicking off its first set of programs with a lecture series. Author Jonathon Gill, who in his newly released book has written extensively on the history of Harlem, will be speaking at different locations throughout the city. For more information on his lecture, “HARLEM: The Four-hundred Year History from Dutch Village to Capital of Black America”, visit www.harlembiennale.org or write to contact@harlembeinnale.org to be put on the mailing list and receive information on all upcoming events.

Time has passed, but the taste still lingers. Early last fall, Elisabeth Deogracias and I co-curated the inaugural dinner of our collaborative endeavor the Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner series. The project aims to bring together small groups of people who do interesting things, linked together by a loose theme that runs throughout each person’s work. With the food itself, we present both the responsible and innovative.

This first dinner entitled COLLABORATION brought together MAKESHIFT member Rioux and his video-making counterpartpoet Josh Cabrido, video artist Dan Herschlein, Ingrid, Chelsea, and Monica from The Way We See The World, and our amazing chef Jake Novick-Finder.

Each guest brought one locally grown ingredient to contribute to Jake’s meal, made on the spot. This literal act of collaboration became only one of many- as the rain began to fall on our courtyard table, the crew joined together to quickly transport our dinner under a makeshift roof.

The conversation was exhilarating: ideas were shared, plans were made, thoughts encouraged. Since that evening The Way We See The World has successful funded a Kickstarter to move forward with their Jelloware project. Rioux and Cabrido released their audio-visual album Everything You Need Is Right Here.

As MAKESHIFT members Rioux and Deogracias leave for time in Berlin and Buenas Aires respectively, we look forward to an eventual second installment of the dinner. We’re already hungry for both the cuisine and ideas.

vingtieme-bush-berg-wick: Sleigh Bells

Hier soir, Sleigh Bells rode into town to preform at La Maroroquinerie in Paris’ 20eme. Currently on a European/American tour after releasing “Treats”, the Brooklyn based duo brought their zombie-cheerleading sounds across the Atlantic. Alexis Krauss (vocals) sings as an angsty teen harpy who is as hypnotizing as she is explosive.

Highlights from the show: bilingual moshing, A/B machines including a fog machine, Krauss screaming into the audience time and time again while happy concert goers bissou-ed all over her hands, and closing the show with “Crown on the Ground”. After the final “ah-ee-oh, ah-ee-oh”, the lights were flipped on to a dazed and sweaty audience. No encore, no ease back into reality, just bright lights and steam.

Light played a big part in the show: as violent and spasmodic as the beats. The album has an intensity, but seeing Sleigh Bells live completed the experience. Its one thing to be bopping down the street with this in your headphones: its another to be bopping up and down in a place and with a people you dont know at all feeling globally homeless in the best possible sense

Pretty rock and roll, indeed.

This past weekend, MAKESHIFT gathered with friends for the inaugural edition of FREE99, a strictly no-cost art swap, curated by HD.

Art quickly ate up the walls of the East Village apartment, as each attendee added their work. The only rule: don’t spend money. After a few hours of chatting, the artists swapped, ending up with a brand new object.

The soiree will continue in monthly installments, inviting new faces and old to share and giving us a reason to make from what we have.

When you think of Peruvian music, you might envision flutes and alpaca — right? But venture into the La Victoria district in the capital city and you will hear the authentic sound of Lima: afro-Peruvian beats. Percussionist, singer and composer, Pepe Villalobos, invites us into his home for some Pisco, dancing and a glimpse at the most talented living musicians connected to this music.

Makeshift’s Salon 13 (the salon is normally held on the 13th of each month) is an informal meeting of the minds. Host, EJ, invites a small group of young thinkers from a range of disciplines to share thoughts, stories, information, and book/film suggestions. Fiery debate is, as always, welcome. She also has an impressive leather jacket collection and does performances at the Whitney with Sigur Ros. It was the best 35 dollars I’ve spent in 2011.

I am usually very skeptical of any exhibition at Gagosian, but the new Ellen Gallgher show (her first solo exhibition in NYC since her 2005 show at the Whitney) is a beautiful selection of some older works in conjunction with some amazing new work. The show does a good job of exhibiting both her large-scale mixed-media paintings, which Gallagher is known for, with smaller free-standing delicately made collages pressed between two panes of glass. Gallagher’s work is up until February 26th and definitely worth the trip to Chelsea. For anyone who likes Gallagher’s work, she can be found in the permanent collections of both the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whitney.
